THIS WEEK'S BRIEF
I finally ran an AI audit on my own work, the thing I keep telling everyone else to do. It found the AI I chose on purpose. It also found a pile of AI features I'd forgotten were AI. My everyday tools had grown them while I wasn't looking, and nobody asked me first. This week starts a short series on managing the AI you didn't hire. It opens with the step everything else depends on. First, you find it.
THE USE CASE
I ran the discovery pass on my own stack, the same one I'd run with a department head, and it took about 30 minutes. I listed every tool I touch in a normal week, then asked one plain question about each: does it have an AI feature, and is it on? The list got uncomfortable fast. My notetaker was summarizing calls and drafting follow-ups. My docs offered to rewrite anything I highlighted. My inbox was suggesting whole replies. None of that was a choice I made. It arrived in an update, quietly, with client names and meeting notes already flowing through it. What I'd do differently: check a tool's AI settings the week it ships the feature, while the change is fresh, instead of catching up months later.
Heads up: this one’s an ad.
Stop Spending. Start Scaling.
Most brands running external traffic aren't scaling — they're just spending. Levanta's free playbook breaks down 7 proven strategies: what works, what bleeds budget, and how top brands drive millions in off-Amazon revenue.
THE PROMPT (members only)
The full AI discovery prompt is for CoS Signal members, along with the prompt library and everything else members get. Founding rate is locked at $14.99/month or $99/year.
THE SIGNAL
Vendors are switching AI on for you and calling it an upgrade. Google enabled Gemini across Workspace by default for business accounts early this year, and it set the tone. Obsidian Security's 2026 report logged close to 70,000 interactions between employees and company data through embedded AI features in a single month. Most of the AI in your stack got there through an update you never filed as an AI decision.
THE RESOURCE
Forbes Tech Council, Default-On AI: Are SaaS Vendors Outsourcing Their Risk to You? is a short, sharp read on why vendors ship AI switched on and what that hands you as the buyer. Worth 5 minutes before your next renewal. Free.
ONE MORE THING
This is part 1 of 4 on managing the AI you didn't hire. Discovery comes first because adoption, oversight, and the judgment calls all depend on knowing what's actually running. If you do one thing this week, run the pass on your own tools before you ask anyone else to. It's humbling, in a useful way.
Reply and tell me the one tool you were surprised to find had AI in it. I'm collecting them.
What's your biggest AI blocker?
Until next week,
